May meeting (16th May)- Join us for our 4th birthday! AGM and Aveling Adventures

This month is our AGM, which also coincides with our 4th birthday celebrations.  We will be joined by Aveling Adventures who will be providing games and team building activities.  

We will also be electing our new President and members of the committee. Our current president has reached the end of her term and will be stepping down, any member (including those who sign up on the night) is eligible to stand for President, if you are interested in joining the committee and/or becoming President and would like an informal chat please email us wi.frome@gmail.com or send us a message on facebook we look forward to hearing from you. 
 
This months competition is '4th birthday bake' themed, we look forward to seeing your sweet and/or savoury interpretations of this

Resolutions:

This year the WI has two resolutions that are being put forward to the National AGM in June.

We will be holding the vote for Frome WI members at our May AGM, if you cannot make this and wish to register your vote please send us an email or contact us via facebook confirming by 4pm 16th May whether you wish to vote in Favour or against each of the following:

Appropriate care in hospitals for people with dementia
'We call upon HM Government and the NHS to provide facilities to enable carers to stay with people with Alzheimer's disease and dementia that have been admitted to hospital.'

Our members can vote for or against each of these resolutions, each resolution should not be voted for over the other but each should be considered independently and vote for or against each of them.  This means that we could end up with one, two or no resolutions this year, and remember each members vote counts!

Dementia Friends -workshop

About Dementia Friends

Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition.

This months competition: 'My Favourite Childhood Bake' 

What is your favourite memory of food?  Grannies Victoria Sponge, Jam Roly Poly, Eccles Cake, Bread Pudding, Coffee & Walnut to name but a few. Our competition this month is to bake your childhood memory. Baking themed prize for the most voted for on the night.

Millinery with Sophie Shields Make your own fascinator

Sophie Shields is a young Somerset wife and mum to 3 young boys with a passion for crafts. Sophie makes ready to buy and bespoke fascinators and headdresses. She says "Making fascinators often feels like creating a piece of sculpture. Each item I make is a 3 dimensional work of art!" Frome WI is lucky enough to have Sophie run our meeting this March in which she will share some of her skills and knowledge and get us to create our own 'Work of Art'.   Non members/visitors are most welcome at a cost of £6.00 per person.  So come along ladies - book your place - first come - first served. We need to have your name by 14th March in order to secure your Fascinator Kit.   Register your name by either posting on our facebook page or emailing us on wi.frome@gmail.com

Gilly is a lifelong WI member and an artist in her own right, join us for papercraft fun

This month we have decided to introduce a monthly competition, this month it's Romantic themed makes/bakes.  A prize will be provided for the winner

Being Well, Staying well- 18th January

January is the month we all turn our thoughts to a better diet, more exercise, healthier lifestyle and good intentions.
With that in mind Julia di Castiglione, one of our Committee Members, will be letting us in on her secrets to achieve these.  Holistic, fun and games, come prepared for some "doing"!

Come along and see if you can pick up any tips for your personal goals, or just come along and join us for a drink, cake and a chat. There will be a raffle, so don't forget if you have any items that would be suitable for our Raffle Table, we would greatly appreciate them; and in return you receive a complimentary ticket.

Memberships are due in January - £37.50 for the year - Tina will be on the door and be happy to help you/answer any questions.

Do you have 'hot sweats' just thinking about entertaining guests? Dave Penfold as seen on master chef will be joining us this month Then join us on Monday 19th October at the HUBnub, Frome at 7.30pm where local chef Dave Penfold will be giving us hints and tips on catering for groups. Drinks and cakes will be available as well as a raffle. Anybody willing to bring a cake or bottle to share will be given a free raffle ticket. Watch your e-mail in boxes for the newsletter.

Dear members (& supporters),

It is with great pleasure that we can announce a few changes to the Frome WI which were agreed by the members present at last nights Summer meeting (after being proposed by the committee who have been working hard behind the scenes).

Our move to the YMCA on Vallis Rd back last year was a temporary one when we were evicted at short notice from the URC when it was suddenly sold for redevelopers. It was very useful to have been able to meet at the YMCA but there were a few flaws with it (parking issues and loud disturbances from other venue users to name a couple) so we have been looking at alternatives & have now found one...

We will be meeting at The Hub Nub (the new name for the URC where we used to meet)  Whittox Lane, Frome, BA11 3BY a new community venue in the centre of town. It is still being redeveloped but we feel this will be much better in the long run!

However, due to other bookings this means we have to meet on the third MONDAY of the month instead of a Thursday (still 7.30-9.30pm). We hope that this will suit our current and attract more future members. 

To mark this 'fresh start' we will be holding a 'relaunch' evening next month on 21st September which will include a variety of 'taster' activities for people to try throughout the evening. We will be giving out goodie bags to everyone who attends and will have a 'special' raffle.  This will also be to celebrate the WI Centenary!

It would be really appreciated if you could help spread the word about our relaunch and we challenge everyone to being at least one friend/relative/colleague/neighbour if possible.

We have made some flyers, posters & leaflets which you are very welcome to share with your friends however you like. Maybe you could pop one through a neighbours door (especially if they are new to the area), share it via social media or display a poster at work?  

We hope you will be able to join us for this exciting evening and look forward to seeing Frome WI fly again now that we have a permanent home!

The sun is shining (mostly), the birds are singing and we are in a party mood!

Next Thursday is our Summer Party.

We will be meeting at The HubNub, which some of you will know as the United Reformed Church where we used to hold our meetings.

Weather permitting we will be outside hurrah!

Please bring something savoury/sweet or a drink to share.
This is a great chance to get to know the rest of our members and the committee better.

We will also be running our monthly raffle, and remember if you bring food/drink to share or a raffle prize you will get a free ticket!

Frome WI is absolutely delighted to be welcoming journalist, writer and comedian Viv Groskop to the WI this coming Thursday (16th July)

Please come along to hear an exclusive preview of her Edinburgh Festival show "Say Sorry to the Lady". Bring a friend, a bottle and be prepared to laugh. See you there!

Huge thank you to Viv Groskop for giving us a preview of her show 'Say sorry to the lady' I have not laughed so much for ages! I think it's safe to say we also provided some entertainment for Viv in the shape of bees and aphrodite!!! Good luck with your stint in Edinburgh. A must see show!x- Ella

June Meeting- Fun with Pointy Sticks- Frome Town Archers

Our June meeting will be held at Frome Town Archers in Woolverton. We are arranging car sharing so please let us know in advance if you will be attending so we can organise the cars and make sure no one is left behind :) Please email wi.frome@gmail.com or contact us via Facebook and our event page

This will be a hands on have a go at Archery, you will be more than welcome to attend if you do not want to shoot as well.

Competition for this month is the best archery related baking! So get your thinking caps on ladies!

Please wear suitable footwear and clothing , the site is on a farm and outdoors in a field so fingers crossed the weather holds :D

November Meeting- Bramble and Wild

The lovely ladies from Bramble & Wild are returning for another great workshop...hooray!

This time they will demonstrate how to make a Christmas wreath and then help us all to make a christmas jam jar arrangement.

Please bring your own jam jar or similar,  a pair of scissors and any greenery or bits & bobs you think could go into your arrangement.

If you have access to lots of greenery please consider bringing some for other people to share who may not have their own, thank you!

New members who join this month will be able to take advantage of the current membership offer which will mean you will have paid up until January 2016! Hurrah!

A reminder to our current members that membership is due for renewal for 2015, please bring a cheque to the next meeting

Frome WI Sushi School Evening

We recently ran a poll to see if you would like to attend a Sushi School evening at Yo! Sushi in Bath for our May Meeting. We didn't get a lot of votes but those we did were resoundingly in favour. I have included the results below, if you click on the picture you can go to the results page for more information.

We have arranged then for a Sushi School evening on Thursday 15th May at Yo! Sushi restaurant in Milsom Place, Bath. However, we need you all to book in advance for this one before 1st May.

In the class you will:

• Learn how to cook Japanese rice;
• View a Fish Cutting demonstration;
• Learn how to make different types of sushi: Maki, Mini ISO, Hand Roll, Nigiri & more

At the end of the class all participants will receive:

• A Sushi School booklet containing a step by step guide to all recipes learnt that day;
• A 25% off voucher to use on your next visit;
• Certificate that confirms that you have completed the course;
• A professional sushi rolling mat to get you started;
• And finally you can enjoy the food that you have created

The cost is £20 for paid members of Frome WI or £25 for guests. (WI will pay £5 for members) You are most welcome to bring any friends male or female as guests.

Apologies for the delay in confirming a full programme for 2014. We did have most of the details arranged some time ago but had hoped to be able to finalise the last couple of meetings some time ago.

There are a couple of meetings we are still working on, one we need your help deciding upon and the other we will have finalised shortly.

May Meeting - Sushi School

The first thing we need is your vote on doing a Sushi Making Workshop at Yo Sushi in Bath for our May meeting. The cost would be £20 for members and £25 for guests, you would be welcome to bring male or female guests.

If we have 25 participants Yo Sushi will close the Bath restaurant to the public for our exclusive use. The evening would be a 2-3 hour workshop learning how to cook Japanese rice, a fish cutting demonstration and Sushi chefs helping us to prepare various different types of sushi including Maki, Mini ISO, Hand Roll, Nigiri & more. You then get to eat what you have made and anything left is yours to take home with you. You also get a recipe book about making sushi, a professional rolling mat, 25% discount voucher for your next visit and a certificate. We think it would be great fun, and offers good value for money.

AGM & Election

Also coming up is our AGM and election. As Storm, Laura and Emma have been the officers of the WI for two years now we would like to stand down from these positions and offer the opportunity to someone else. Remember, this is your WI and you can make a difference and get involved. We will also be looking for new committee members to help out with organising various things. None of the roles require any previous experience or a great deal of committment. The committee meet monthly on the 2nd Thursday of the month to finalise details of meetings and discuss any other business. If you are interested in joining the committee or becoming and office please do join us at our April meeting on 10th April 7.30pm at The Cornerhouse.

There will be lots of help and support for those who take on the officer roles and Storm, Laura & Emma are all happy to continue to be committee members to ensure a smooth transition.

Membership Survey and Promotion

So far this year we have just over 30 paid up members. We have noticed this is a significant reduction in numbers from last year when we had over 50 members, although we have had several new ladies join us which is lovely. If you were previously a member of Frome WI and have not renewed we'd really love to know why, we've set up a simple survey (just 2 questions) and would really appreciate you completing it http://wifrome.polldaddy.com/s/former-member-survey

If you have not joined Frome WI we'd love your feedback too, so please do feel free to answer the survey, we welcome feedback as the WI is the sum of its members. You are always welcome to email us at wi.frome@gmail.com

As we have seen a reduction in numbers this year we would really like to promote the WI some more, if you have any ideas on how and where we could do this we'd love to hear them. The best promotion is recommendation so please do bring along your friends and relatives to our meetings so they can see what it is all about.

And finally... the WI magazine, WI Life are looking for stories to feature in the magazine. The sort of things they are looking for are

QUIRKY TRIPS/DAYS OUT/EVENTS
In the past we’ve visited various weird and wonderful festivals from pea and scarecrow to Victorian. We’ve gone worm charming, clay pigeon shooting and rush bearing. We know that WI members are always up to something a bit different and we want to be there to witness it so we can write about it! (Please give us plenty of notice so we can arrange time, travel and photographer).

INSPIRING MEMBERS:
If you or one of your members has a particularly unusual job, hobby or way of life, we’d love to hear from you for our ‘inspiring women’ page.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS/HELP
Great community projects or activities individual WI members, WIs or federations are involved in that can make a real difference, however small. Last year we reported on Saddleworth’s ‘Shop Local’ festival – a topic that became so big, saving our high street was voted on as a campaign.
